2019.06.18 – SINE SOLE SILEO

Every so often, I find myself reflecting on sundials. Well not specifically sundials, but the saying inscribed on many throughout history: “SINE SOLE SILEO.” Sure it may seem a little narcissistic because the statement contains my last name, but my reason for coming back to it time and time again (pun completely intended) is because of what the statement means when translated:

“Without the Sun, I remain silent.”

Ancient Sundial & Modern Sundial (world’s most accurate) Both have the inscription “Sine Sole Sileo.”

As you know, sundials need sunlight to tell you the time of day. Without the light of the Sol, the device cannot speak. No matter how beautiful or accurate a sundial may be, it is useless without its source of energy. It simply becomes a yard decoration.

Most mornings, but especially Sundays, I pray to remember that without the Son, I cannot preach or pastor. Without the light of God shining upon me through his Son, does anything I do or say really have meaning?

I encourage you to adopt this practice. Understand in your own life that you need His light to shine upon you so that you may represent Him. Let this be your daily mantra:

Without the SON, I remain silent!

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26 esv

By the way, the sun rose this morning in Sparta, NJ at the exact same time that this post was published!

    1. I was speaking about purpose rather than character flaw. Idealist existential Boomer being super critical of the 13er who’s generation eats your lunch when it comes to SAT scores and practical and thoughtful responses to their environment. For the rest of you, just know that Joe and I absolutely adore each other and there is an inside joke going here! 🙂
