“And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell.
But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”Joshua 24:15 esv
I love this passage as Joshua challenges the people as to whether they are going to be like the world around them, or will they chose to serve Yahweh. If they don’t want to serve Yahweh, maybe they should go back to worship the false gods of Egypt or the Amorites.
Our world is full of false gods, not unlike those of the ancient cultures of the Bible. Sure the modern gods are not carved images of beings who govern mountains or oceans, represent fertility or war, or command storms and stars. Maybe our modern false gods are concepts, philosophies, and people who attempt to lure us into worshiping nature rather than appreciate it, arouse intense feelings of sensuality and rage, or push us to have a warped sense of self-esteem that tells us we can control whatever we want.
I stand her today with a challenge:
You can chose to worship the gods of our culture.
But as for me and my house, we will serve 42!
