Something to Think About – 2020.01.31

For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.

Psalm 86.5 esv

Today’s verse is packed with so much that we could spend all kinds of time mining its treasures. Rich Hebrew words are describing the goodness, forgiveness, and steadfast love of the Adonai are a veritable plethora of word studies. But I shall stay focused on the last phrase: “all who call upon you.”

The context is that David is crying out to YaHWeh in his time of need. In his helpless childlike passion, it is almost as if David is reaching up like a toddler toward “42” yearning to be picked up and held. The key is acknowledgment; call upon is to recognize that someone is there to answer if you call out.

When we fall in life, do we instinctually recognize that God is there? Do we reach up knowing that the steadfast reckless love of Jesus awaits? Do we understand that we have access to a no-holds-barred affection that is willing to lift us if we only acknowledge and reach out to him?

Jesus told his disciples that we must have the faith of children (Mark 10:14), for this is what the Kingdom of God is all about. Never be afraid to express your inner child to the One who is the perfect parent!

Take a few moments right now to reach out to 42. Stop what you are doing and take just one minute to reach up, for he would like to hear from you!
