Be still and know that I am “42”!

It was a very quiet walk; the only sounds I could hear were birds, crickets, and a gently breeze blowing through the rows of corn. There were no jet engines on approach to Philadelphia International Airport, nor were there sounds of tractor trailers and Jake breaks. The were only the gentle noises of 42’s creation.

The day before, jets were flown into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. A crater was still smoldering in a field in Shanksville, PA where some amazing people dared to rush the cockpit of a plane heading toward Washington, D.C. Yet the only thing I heard the next day was the gentle noises of the Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything.

It was then a Bible verse hit me like a lightning bolt. It sank so deep into my heart that it would become, and still is, my life verse. I heard 42 roar in the quiet!

In this time of crisis, nineteen years after that September 12th day when I heard 42 say it emphatically to me, I remind you that he still speaks:

Be still and know that I am God.”

Psalm 46:10

This verse is on our sign at the church today, and it will stay on that sign until we are no longer practicing social distancing. It will be in my weekly update to the church that will go out shortly. The Psalm it comes from also inspired another pastor back in 1529 to write “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.”

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;

Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:

For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;

His craft and pow’r are great, and, armed with cruel hate,

On earth is not his equal.

Verse 1 – “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” (Martin Luther)

My friends, be well, be in prayer, and be of good cheer. And may you…

Live Long and Prosper
