You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
Leviticus 19:18
It is almost like the gang at biblegateway.com is throwing me a bone here! There has never been a time in my lifetime where these words mean so much to the people of Christ. Everybody, including the pastor, is on edge because of pandemic lockdown, political upheaval, the cry of voices long silenced, etc.
A few days ago, I received an email that was one of the most offensive things I have ever read. I had to read it twice because I could not believe what I was reading. It was hateful and bigoted, and yet the originator of the words seemed to think that they were completely justified. I was angry and offended. But I will take no vengeance or bear a grudge.
Over the past three months, I have seen bad behavior. I witnessed disingenuousness, disrespect, lies, and profoundly ignorant behavior. But I will love my neighbor and recognize that I am flawed and can fall prey to my own bad behavior. Because I want others to love me in spite of myself.
Why? Because “42” says so!
