WABI-SABI

Several years ago, “J” and I discovered a worldview from traditional Japanese culture. This concept, called Wabi-sabi (侘寂), speaks to viewing the world as constantly changing and imperfect yet finding beauty in its transience and imperfection.

A couple of years ago, we were sitting with a friend from the Yakima Nation, and Cougar Tracks shared a similar concept. When many indigenous people create a beaded bag or clothing accessory, a bead or beads are intentionally added out of place somewhere in the pattern to make it imperfect. This misplacement is known as a “signature bead,” thus making the item imperfect, as only the Creator is perfect.

My friends, you and I are ever-changing and imperfect beings, yet our Lord sees the beauty in our imperfections! We are the product of wabi-sabi.

I choose wabi-sabi! I see the world, others, and myself as ever-changing and imperfect, and understanding this takes a lot of the pressure off!

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But when the PERFECT comes, the partial will pass away.
