Great peace have those who love your law;
Psalm 119:165
nothing can make them stumble.
Yes, you read it correctly; here is a verse 165 in Psalm 119. The last verse in the psalm is actually 176!
The verse begins with “shalom,” not just any shalom but “great” peace. And as we have studied before, shalom means more than peace; it carries with it life’s fullness, completeness, soundness, and welfare.
Another word in this verse, “your law,” refers to the Hebrew word “Torah,” the five books of Moses. Notice that “your law” refers to it as belonging to YHWH. It is not our possession but solely belongs to the LORD.
When we interpret a passage like this, we often get derailed because we think that loving and following the scriptures leads to a life of great peace and freedom from stumbling. If we are honest with ourselves, we all know this way of thinking is hopelessly flawed.
It is to love the One who is found within the Law that is a gift to us because it always leads to him, and in him is “great peace.”
As for the stumbling part, plenty of verses point to the Triune God of Grace being the stumbling block for those who do not love him. I will let you search them out.
So in the end, this text is not about you being perfect;
it states emphatically that 42 is!
