Listen to the Rain

“Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.”

1 Kings 19:12

Last Friday, during my predawn reflection time, I wasn’t feeling very reflective. It had been a week of endless distractions, unpredictable behavior of “kings” and “queens,” and emotional turmoil; I felt alone. Even the weather was not cooperating as a thunderstorm rolled through the darkness in Sparta—flashes of light, rumbling that shook the house, and a deluge. Even so, I lit my candle and sat, attempting to enter a quiescent state.

Behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire.

1 Kings 19:11-12

After several minutes, without warning, the lightning and rumbling ceased, and all that was left was the gentle sound of the rain, cleansing rain. I sat and listened. Eventually, darkness began to be replaced with light; slow but steady, the sky grew lighter. But still, the gentle whisper of the rain.

And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

1 Kings 19:12-13

In life’s storms, take some time to sit quietly with God for a while. No need to read or pray; sit. Let him slowly wash away the chaos because he was not in that great noise: thunder, lightning, deluge. Let him gently bathe you with his living water. Listen to the rain. Listen to the rain. Listen for the still small voice…

Then let 42 speak. “What are you doing here, HitchHiker?
