  1. Your sermon last week included some words that have changed meaning over the years. This week I discovered a word that has changed. In the 15th and 16th century the English language pronoun “You” and “Your” was considered a formal use of the word much like formal French word for “you” is “Vous”. The English language also had a familiar word for “you” – thy, thee, and thou. In French the familiar is “tu”. These words would only be used for family and close friends where the word “you” and “your” would be used for more honored people, strangers, or elders. What’s interesting is the King James Bible chose to use the familiar thee, thy and thou when referring to God. This was an actually a protest against the classism of the time. Over the years the formal/familial terms have switched where “thou” now has a more formal connotation.
