For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21
Sometimes, we get caught up in words like “righteousness” because the secular context is often negative: “You are so self-righteous!” But the use here is about something so much more.
In the context of the 1st century, especially from a Jewish perspective, which would be how Paul uses it, it means justice, justness, and to live rightly. Paul understands that righteousness comes from God and that righteous living should be guided by the divine example revealed in Jesus Christ. So let’s take today’s verse and paraphrase it:
For our sake, God made the Christ to carry our sin even though he was sinless, so that in him we might become more just, recognize the unjust, live rightly.
In other words, follow the example of our Savior. And today is a “Good” day to see that example of righteousness!
