But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4
Jesus answers the tempter by quoting Deuteronomy 8:3. Whenever I read this verse, I see the contrast between creation and the Creator. The devil challenges Jesus in his creaturely discomfort of hunger. Jesus responds to him by pointing to something greater than creation. It’s the Creator who spoke the words that brought all creation into existence!
Sometimes, we are faced with the complexities or pains of creation in our own lives, and it is easy to try to solve all the issues by manipulating and seeking solace from creation. It is best to submit to God first and then see how the problems can be resolved. It doesn’t mean creation is not helpful or should be ignored, but remember that it would not exist without the Creator who spoke it all into existence. But you must also be prepared to sit tight because God’s ways are not our ways!
