I’m feeling “salty” today! No, I am not seasoning food, tasting like seawater, or embracing a nautical theme. I am not preserving food, melting winter ice, or using crude or coarse language. And I am not feeling resentful or bitter toward someone.
Today, I am focusing on my commitment to God’s covenant with me and my fellow hitchhikers. I want to see every individual as being made in the image of God (Imago Dei), and I also appreciate that I, too, am made in that image. Today, I wish to “salt the covenant!”
Oh, you’ve never heard this word used this way?
As an offering of firstfruits you may bring them to the Lord, but they shall not be offered on the altar for a pleasing aroma. You shall season all your grain offerings with salt. You shall not let the salt of the covenant with your God be missing from your grain offering; with all your offerings you shall offer salt. Leviticus 2:12-13
The concept is recognizing and preserving your covenant with God and your neighbor and then taking that into the world. Thus, “salting the covenant.”
Lord,
Let us be extra intentional in seeing your image in others today. Let us faithfully see that honoring and loving them is what you have called all of us to do. Please keep us salty all day!! Don’t let the world distract us from your will for us.
In the name and image and love of Jesus, I pray. Amen!
