The World Just Is…
I have been having morning devotions with N.T. Wright. Not literally, but “literature-ly.” (Don’t look it up; I made it up.) We’re working together on Truth, and he postulated something that is simply profound.
The early Christians did not believe in progress… neither did they believe the world was getting worse and worse… They believed that God was going to do for the whole cosmos what he had done for Jesus at Easter.
Surprised by Hope – p.93 On Earth as in Heaven pp. 254-55
In today’s world, some decry that things are getting worse, and others claim things are getting better. They both set out to take the world backward or forward, as both think they can fix this by either recreating a past that no longer exists or a future that they are powerless to perfect.
In reality, the world is, well, broken and will remain broken until our Savior returns. We can’t fix it because we are not the Creator, Savior, and trustworthy Change Agent. Maybe we should be looking to him.
With this in mind, we are called to simply live together faithfully looking toward a cosmos that will be made new again. And we are to live into Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love as we all wait to see his face, feel his touch, and hear his voice as we walk in the Garden with him.
Until then, the world just is…
