But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33
Notice the “But” hanging out there at the beginning of this sentence (Yes, I intended the wordplay). It seems that Jesus’s audience may not be seeking the kingdom. What is getting in the way? This verse is from the Sermon on the Mount section on anxiousness, which is part of the problem.
Our society is incredibly selfish, and we like to think that we have the market cornered on anxiousness. Yet, through Jesus’s teaching, we find that first-century folks were also anxious about stuff. This is why the teachings of Jesus are so relevant to us in our context today, yet our modernist egocentricity gets in the way, and we often ignore what the Teacher has to teach.
So, I ask…
- Are you seeking the kingdom of God?
- Is your heart aligned with God’s heart?
- Are you practicing the “right living” that Jesus calls you to; to love all who are made in the image of God?
If you are, this is to you credit, and Jesus is saying, “Well done!”
But if you are not, Jesus is saying, “Get to work.”
