Litmus Testing

I was a biology education major in my undergrad, with a minor in general science. One of those old-school tests to determine the pH of a liquid was known as litmus paper, an acid-base indicator. You dip the paper in the liquid, turning blue if the solution is basic and red if it is acidic.

The interesting thing about acids and bases is that the higher or lower the pH, the more caustic the solution can be. Caustic means they could dissolve human tissue—examples:

  • Lye (a caustic base)
  • battery acid (a caustic acid)

Yet, the closer an acid or base pH gets toward neutral, the less caustic or destructive it is and the more useful it can be. Examples: lemon juice is slightly acidic, and ammonia is somewhat basic, yet both can be useful in household tasks.

Hmmm… you might be on to something HitchHiker. 🤔

If you mix a caustic base with a caustic acid, they can neutralize themselves as the combination becomes less irritating!

!woW What a concept!

I have been litmus tested by some throughout two decades of ministry. Some have said that I am too red, and others too blue. I must be more neutral and less irritating than those hurling the accusations. I guess that makes me a buffer!
