What will the day bring?

By now, many of you know of my O’Dark-thirty ritual of having coffee with Jesus. The other day, he popped into my head the often used joyful statement from Psalm 118:

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

At about five-thirty ante meridiem (Latin for “before midday”) on Sunday, my mind began thinking about my schedule: worship, fellowship, meeting, etc. Then I stopped and realized that I have no idea what the day will bring.

Yes, there is a sketch on a calendar and a Sunday routine. But there are many details that will unfold throughout the day that were not known before.

  • Maybe I will see someone I haven’t seen in a long time?
  • Maybe a crisis will arise?
  • Maybe I will meet someone new, or say goodbye to someone I will never see again?
  • Maybe the sermon will be a flop or gremlins will infect the sound system?
  • Maybe I will fall ill, or maybe I will…. (You get the picture)

Each and every day, we have only a vague idea of what will happen; in reality we are stepping into a liminal space. We stand on the threshold having know idea.

BUT…

The Lord of LIFE, the UNIVERSE, and EVERYTHING knows every detail of our day because he stands before, in, through, and beyond that liminal space with us. He is “42” and knows exactly what we will get into that day, and even the things we will miss. After all, this is a day that the LORD has made…

Let us rejoice and be glad in it!
