COMMUNION
The word “communion” is an interesting mishmash of word parts that all dance together. Let’s break it down to see the dance.
We begin with the prefix “CO.” These two letters translate as: together, with, joint, associate, and relating to.
When we add “MM” to “CO” and now have nouns and verbs such as: COMMon, COMMunity, COMMunal, and COMMune, all adding to the meaning of together, associate m, with, joint and relating to.
Before we add “UNION” to our other pieces we find verbs and nouns such as: joining two or more parts together, multiple entities (things, parts, individual, associates, bodies) becoming one, and sharing a common purpose.
Put all three together and you get a super word, COMMUNION, with definitions including an act or instance of sharing, a spiritual union, an intimate fellowship, and a body sharing a common faith and purpose. It also means a sacred rite celebrated in many Christian traditions.
Synonyms for this super word: community, fellowship, body, unity, oneness, togetherness, and affinity.
Antonyms of this super word: estrangement, alienation, disaffection, antagonism, and enmity.
Why am I getting all nerdy on you with all this dictionary work? Simply so I can ask you this question.:
Do you think the Body of Christ is about the Synonyms or the Antonyms?
Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.
1 Corinthians 12:27
