This Lenten week’s word is דֶּרֶךְ (DeReK) whose meanings include: way, path, road, journey, manner, and conduct.

Notice this noun can speak at multiple levels:

  • The physical thing to travel on: I will drive on the parkway.
  • The description of the route one will travel on: I will take Route 42 north to the Heavenly Turnpike.
  • The manner in which the travel will be undertaken: I will try to follow the traffic rules and stop every two hours to stretch my legs on my journey.

What if Jesus meant all of the above when he said that he was the WAY? (John 14:6). What if Jesus is the road to travel on, and our GPS to readjust us when we have meander in the wrong direction, and the one reminding us to be kind toward other drivers and stay alert?

This week, focus on God as your destination. Have you swerved off the path into the mud, deviated in the wrong direction, or failed to love your fellow travelers? Never forget that Jesus has your back.

Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Psalm 25:4
