The Power of Creation

The other day I was walking Mayhem!! when I noticed something for the first time on the property line between us and the bank, where I have lived for thirteen years. There is a massive maple tree with a piece of old fence pole incorporated into the tree (see above). The tree had just grown around this human-made obstacle. That fence must have been removed decades ago, but the pipe is still there.

You may not know that my bachelor degree was in biology and general science education. I’ve always admired creation’s ability to clean up the human mess: hurricanes reshape beaches, tsunamis wipe out entire areas, and Santa Ana winds can fuel fires like gasoline and shortly after new growth begins. The tree just growing around and incorporating the obstacle is part of the power to reclaim itself.

Ironically, our broken humanity is either hyper concerned or hyper dismissive about creation, and then we fight about it as if we were its creators. The fact of the matter is that the Creator has given creation all kinds of ways to recycle the garbage that humanity causes or obsesses about. The hubris that we think we can ignore or fix it is astounding.

When it comes down to it, doesn’t it make sense that the Creator of Life, the Universe, and Everything has the power became one of us and clean up the garbage in our hearts? All with a tree and the words, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.“

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

Genesis 2:15
