Dandelions
On Sunday in the treasure chest I use for children’s sermons, one of the kids had filled it with dandelions. He had put both the flowering and seed spreading phases of the dandelion in the box. I spoke about the flowering phase as the part that we show as beauty to the world, and the seed phase as being the sharing of our love and faith throughout the world.
Over the past few days I have been wondering if we have displayed enough beauty or cast enough the seed that is Him in an affective way. The world certainly acts like we are weeds that need to be exterminated, and the weed killer seems to be working quite well. And I am not convinced that we can blame them.
I know this seems to be a dark image, but is it possible that this is a great metaphor for us to sit back and contemplate whether we’ve strayed off message? Are we living what Jesus taught and demonstrated, or have we become the scribes, Pharisees, and Sadducees of our day, getting bogged down in our nitpicking, dogma, and political action.
I think it might be time to revisit the Sermon on the Mount again!
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14-16
