Our own Meribah & Massah

I was reminded in my devotional time a couple of weeks back about the way the people of Israel questioned Moses about God’s presence (a repetitive theme), and Moses’ frustration with them expressed to YaHWeH.

The scripture was Exodus 17:1-7, and they are demanding satisfaction and whining that God is not providing. Once again God delivers; this time with water from a stone. Moses calls a spade a spade by naming the location and event Meribah and Massah. The former literally translates as quarrel, strife, and contention. The latter translates as wound, blow, or slaughter.

When we question the Lord’s provision even in our times, are we not causing strife? Do our actions and attitudes wound God and others? Has our life become a Meribah and Massah of our own creation?

On our life’s journey, let’s think try not to think with a scarcity mindset and live into the abundance received from a benevolent God. For the LORD always provides!
