IMMUTABLE
Every day in my email, I receive a word of the day from Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Recently, that word was IMMUTABLE. Here is the definition: “Immutable is a formal adjective used to describe something that is unable to be changed.”
For years, I have challenged the people I serve that change, like it or not, is inevitable. But I have also told them that change is not always bad; some changes can be good. A raise or promotion can be a good change. Meeting and marrying the love of your life or having children can be good changes. Buying a house can be a good change too. Yet, each of these can have its dark side.
The four most amazing changes in my life have been meeting and marrying “J”, the births of Chewbacca and Baby (my son-in-law, Schmooze, was a bonus), and my call to serve in the Body of Christ. Yet every one of these has brought a myriad of challenges, fears, and frustrations along with immeasurable joy.
What is obvious is that some people fear change, especially church people. In their minds, change is the enemy and must be squelched by every means necessary. However, historically the Church of Jesus Christ has been changing for 2000 years. Some of the changes have been slow, while others have been fast. Some changes have been amazing, and others have been not so good. How can this be? Because broken humanity is always in the mix. Anecdotally, many people fear change, yet (and I can’t remember where I read it) it’s not change they fear, but loss.
Over the past five or six years, through all the chaos that our culture has offered up, I have learned that there are only two things in Life, the Universe, and Everything that are truly IMMUTABLE: the Triune God of Grace (known as “42” in this bLOG since 2019), and Change itself!
I encourage to hang on to that IMMUTABLE Spirit of Grace, Mercy, and Love of “42”, for Change is always on the horizon…
“For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.” Malachi 3:6
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
