Sabbath Rest

And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.” Mark 2:27-28

Sabbath is an interesting concept. For many it is a day for worship, reflection, and ritual. There are rules to follow, and work to be avoided. For Jews, and some Christians, it begins at sunset on Friday and ends on Saturday evening. For many Christians. It is Sunday at sunrise and ends at bedtime.

Yet, in the commandment, YaHWeH says: “Rest.” You worked all week, so rest and relax. Stop, remember, and do what God did on the seventh day; REST.

So what happens if you have to work on the Sabbath? Are you sinning? No! Just pick another day.

Early on in ministry, I realized that Sunday could not be my Sabbath. How does one rest when they get up at O’Dark-thirty with a mind full of a message that has to be delivered, dozens of people to greet and minister to before, after worship or during fellowship time, a class to teach, etc. Usually by afternoon, I have what I call “Sunday brain.” I barely can remember my telephone number, but even then, the schedule may dictate more activities that last until the evening.

As a pastor, I discovered that Monday became the best day to keep Sabbath. If I was lucky, I could start it early and catch a nap or a football game (or both). Maybe we have dinner with friends, and I cook. Or maybe go to dinner and let somebody else cook. But on Monday, unless a crisis occurred, I could do things that were not work related. I could engage in grocery shopping therapy, get the dog groomed, or just drive around. I could take a nap or relax on the couch and binge watch a show. I could pull weeds or split some wood. The key here is “REST” and do things I enjoy. Note: I began writing this bLOG on my Sabbath.

You sed, God commands that Sabbath be a rest stop, and “42” is always there to help us to recharge! After all, He rested on the seventh day.
