Tonight the sun will set on the ridge at 4:40 PM. It’s the first sunset post-Daylight Saving Time; I guess it wasn’t permanent after all. Sunsets will keep getting earlier until we hit a sunset at 4:15 PM on December 21st (Winter Solstice). How gloomy. The only positive is that this trend will reverse, and sunset will be at 4:17 PM on Christmas Day.
In honor of this gathering gloom, here is another poem from Graeme Edge of The Moody Blues. It appeared on their most successful album, Days of Future Passed.

“Late Lament”
Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every womb
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day’s useless energy’s spentImpassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and settles her son
Senior citizens wish they were youngCold-hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colours from our sight
Red is grey and yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion
