Tanka from a Hitchhiker – 2020.08.19

In the beginning

YaHWeH made a bird of peace

We chose bird of prey.

His cross calls us to return.

Spread your wings and fly to Him!

We all growl like bears; we moan and moan like doves; we hope for justice, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far from us. For our transgressions are multiplied before you, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are with us, and we know our iniquities… Isaiah 59:11-12

  1. So true. As the apostle Paul said, we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God. No exceptions. I believe that if we don’t have a continuing, humble awareness of our own flaws and shortcomings, then we are not truly experiencing the Grace that God has showered upon us in Jesus Christ. Thomas Kempis, in his classic, “The Imitation of Christ,” wrote that “a humble understanding of yourself is a surer path to God than deep inquiry into knowledge.”

Pondering that comment has always helped to keep me humble, especially when I’m tempted to criticize others. I always remind myself that these people are most likely carrying burdens that I know absolutely nothing about. I don’t want to add to their burdens, so I always make it a point to encourage people when I can, which is almost always better than trying to correct them. I’ve got my own flaws to attend to anyway, which I confess, keep me mighty busy!
