“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen—”
Deuteronomy 18:15
In context, YaHWeH had promised another would replace Moses when the Hebrew people enter into the promised land, and Moses passes this information on. The man who would replace him would be Joshua.
Interestingly, in Hebrew, the name Joshua means “God saves.” In Aramaic, Jesus’ name (Yeshua) also means “God saves.”
Inspired by the Holy Spirit and the teachings of Jesus, the early church leaders were able to see that the Hebrew scriptures speak at multiple levels; the immediate context and the prophecy of One to come. For example, many passages talk about King David and the Anointed One to come; King Jesus.
In that vane, the letter’s author to the Hebrew Christians sees that Jesus is another type of Joshua. Hebrews 4:8-10 states that Joshua would lead the Hebrew people into the rest of the Promised Land, but Jesus leads all people into God’s promised rest.
We often focus on our present context and fail to see the God of Life, the Universe, and Everything is most likely working on something of future significance. We know that the Lord of Life is at work even in this present context where churches have had to find a way to be a community in a prolonged trial, and what this is leading to in the short run and long run remains to be seen or understood. He is cooking up something; you can be sure!
Can you smell what the “Rock” is cooking ?!?!
