Isaiah 43:18-19
Like Hitchhiker and Flying Scotsman, Godzilla know context too! This scripture has 42, through Isaiah, telling people in difficult times to see he do new thing on other side of disaster.
Disaster they suffer result of breaking covenant with God over and over and over again. He tell them he send Babylon, but they not change. Babylon come and destroy Jerusalem including sacred space called temple. Many people forcibly taken to Babylon, and others scattered throughout the known world (this called diaspora).
People of exile lament, and 42 basically tell them that past things gone and never come back. But then he tell them look for new things he do. They have clear direction to follow if they keep eyes open.
He not just saying they go home and rebuild Judea and Temple, but even bigger picture; they will see new thing come. He provide Way, Truth, and Life to all people!
So in our time of lament, listen as 42 tell us not hang onto past things. In social and pandemic chaos, he do new thing. Your job to open eyes, be faithful to him, and encourager for others. That new path to walk; that new river to travel.
