Hitchhiker’s bLOG 2022.02.07

My friends, let me introduce you to the Mark Sandwich. Mark takes two stories and creates a mashup in this theological and literary technique. Its structure takes one story split into two slices, and another is sandwiched between to reveal a common theme (the meat) for both. We have already seen two: Mark 3:20-35 and 4:1-20, and we will see four later: 11:12-21, 14:1-12, 14:53-72, and 15:40-16:8. The following three bLOGs reveal a WHOPPER of an example (pun attended)!

Jairus’ Daughter Healed | Markcartoonistbible.com

Part 1 – Jairus

When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him; and he was by the sea. Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and begged him repeatedly, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live.” So he went with him. Mark 5:21-24a

Jesus and boys are back in Galilee. Jairus approaches and throws himself at the Lord’s feet. His daughter is gravely ill, and he is desperate, repeatedly begging Jesus to come and heal her.

This scene is quite the spectacle as Jairus is the synagogue equivalent of a Presbyterian elder, part of the leadership team responsible for keeping the synagogue functioning. He would likely be closely aligned with the Pharisees, scribes, and teachers. And yet he lays at the feet of this controversial rabbi. Jairus doesn’t care!

When “J” was pregnant with Chewie, contractions began eight weeks before the due date. They would also cause decelerations of fetal heart rate. We waited for almost three days as the doctors tried to stop the contractions. We sat and prayed to the Lord at one point as nothing worked. We may not have necessarily begged, but we humbly bowed before Jesus.

The Holy Spirit calmed us, and on the third day, Chewie was born via c-section. It’s hard to believe that boy only weighed 4 1/2 pounds when he came into the world!

Have you ever been in the position when you felt powerless and humbled yourself before the Lord?

Lord,

Help us never to be embarrassed to fall before your feet, even if others watch. After all, you may use that scene to change someone’s life forever.

I pray in the Healer’s name. Amen!

Live Long and Prosper
