I’m Right Here!
The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him. And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” Mark 8:11-12
The Pharisees come and begin debating with Jesus. They are looking for a sign (typically from heaven like the prophets of old), given primarily to confirm, corroborate or authenticate. They are looking for validation that God has authorized Jesus to do what he’s doing. Mainly because they believe he is not.
You can here the groan rise up from within Jesus. You can almost see the anger, hurt, and sadness in his eyes as he exclaims: “Why?!” Jesus then declares that these people will not see this validation; not because it won’t be given to them but rather because they are unable to see it. After all, the sign is standing right in front of them!
I’m right here!
Lord,
Open my eyes that I may see glimpses of truth you have for me. Place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free.
Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, your will to see. Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine!
I pray this in the name of the Triune God of Grace. Amen!
