The Suffering Servant

And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly.

And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” Mark 8:31-33

If you remember way back, I told you that the “Son of Man” is a designation for the messianic savior spoken of throughout the Old Testament. So Jesus is telling them that the Messiah (the Christ) will suffer at the hands of religious leaders of the Jewish people and be killed. But on the third day, he will rise. Note: Mark plainly states that Jesus said this “plainly.” In other words, this was no parable!

Peter the “Knucklehead” steps up to rebuke Jesus. Jesus rebukes right back with harsh words. Peter sets his thinking in worldly (the Devils’ playground) terms, not in Kingdom terms.

My friends, we must always be careful not to think we know better than the Lord. Our culture speaks in control terms, and the Christ thinks in submission terms!

Lord Jesus,

The world speaks of strength, money, power, and control. Teach us to think, submit, and serve as you do, always motivated by LOVE.

I pray this in the name of The Lamb that was Slain who was raised from the dead on the third day. Amen!
