For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:12
People who know me are aware that I’m a planner; I just give the appearance of shooting from the hip.
I have spreadsheets for six months of sermons and the entire year plotted out. I have “To-Do” lists, and methodically put away money for tuition, weddings, retirement, etc. Even sermons are prepped “six ways to Sunday” (pun completely intentional) as I have my rituals of reflection, writing, and practice. Some may even think I’m a little excessive or even obsessive when they learn of all the moving parts and balls in the air.
Here’s the secret. I plan because I know and trust that 42 has PLANs that supersede mine. Out of nowhere comes something or someone to disrupt the schedule, an inspiration from out of left field that changes a sermon an hour before service, a funeral, building collapse (yes, that has actually happened), or pandemic.
No problem; 42’s got this!
When we walk with the Lord
“Trust and Obey” (John H. Sammis, 1887)
In the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way;
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
