“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior… for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. Luke 1:46-47, 49
During this year’s Advent Season, I’ve worked a great deal with this scripture, Mary’s prayer called the Magnificat. When I think about this young lady confronted by an angel, Gabriel, whose message is that she will bear the Anointed One, whose name means “God Saves,” I am amazed at her willingness to serve. It will mean exposure to a cruel world that will decry “scandal,” jeopardize her engagement to Joseph and change her life forever. And it is not until the baby is born and they present him at the temple that Simeon tells her that because of Jesus, her heart will be broken.
Isn’t this a fantastic role model for us? We are all called to bear Christ into the world. Chances are the most painful thing we will face is an angry athiest or a strained relationship with friends and family.
